Laneway Festival 2016 sideshows announced

CHVRCHES, Purity Ring, The Internet, Tobias Jesso Jr., Majical Cloudz & Shamir announce
Laneway sideshows.

CHVRCHES

Laneway Presents is pleased to share details of Glaswegian three-piece CHVRCHES’ Laneway Festival sideshows this February.

With the release of their incredibly impressive second album Every Open Eye, CHVRCHES have strengthened their status as one of the most-loved and respected bands in the game. Attracting perfect or near-perfect scores all over the world, the album broke into the Top 10 in the US, UK, Australia and elsewhere on its release.

Their debut Bones of What You Believe (2013) was recorded in isolation and propelled them to the spotlight via early blog support, word of mouth and over 350 shows in just two years.

A study in contrasts - a fiercely intelligent pop band with a DIY ethos, wildly popular and critically acclaimed, a huge-sounding band that do more with less - CHVRCHES are poised to become one of 2016’s true global stars.

Praise for Every Open Eye:

It’s an assured follow-up to their US-conquering debut, ‘The Bones of What You Believe’, picking out its predecessor’s stadium-pop moments and turning up the intensity without ever overselling its charm
- 4/5, The Guardian

A cleansing release, commanding your limbs to clear the nearest usable space of bystanders and dance it clean.” - 8/10, NME

One of the strongest pop albums of 2015.” - 4.5/5 Sydney Morning Herald

PURITY RING

WITH SPECIAL GUESTS MAJICAL CLOUDZ

PURITY RING, the Canadian duo comprising vocalist Megan James and producer/synth wizard Corin Roddick, are enjoying a huge 2015. Their stellar second album Another Eternity (4AD), has been all over the radio, and helped them sell out shows worldwide and spellbind audiences on late-night TV.

Surely one of the most exciting live propositions around right now, PURITY RING’s show is highly original. Corin plays a custom-made synth/percussion gizmo that doubles as a light show, and Megan designs all of their onstage getup. Prepare for a complete sensory experience when PURITY RING hit the stage at their Laneway sideshow this year.

Joining them on the bill in Melbourne are the otherworldly MAJICAL CLOUDZ. The minimal synth/vocal project of Montreal local Devon Welsh and multi-instrumentalist Matthew Otto, the Cloudz are one of those rare acts that have the power to make you laugh, cry, fall deeply in love and have your heart savagely broken all in the space of one set. LP Are You Alone?, the follow up to 2013’s brilliant Impersonator came out last week and is already looking to be one this year’s word-of-mouth favourites.

MAJICAL CLOUDZ will also be doing their own headline show in Sydney. Details below.

Witnessing Purity Ring live is like watching a scene from a dream; beautiful, impenetrable and hypnotic” - The Line Of Best Fit

As Purity Ring begin to play, a visual and sensory experience unlike anything we've ever encountered before explodes before our eyes and ears.” - The Music

THE INTERNET
WITH SPECIAL GUESTS JAALA

R&B/neo-soul outfit THE INTERNET have got to be the most seductive Odd Future offshoot to date - just listen to Girl ft. Kaytradana for proof.

The L.A based band released their third album Ego Death in July this year, to uniformly excellent reviews and praise from media and fans alike. Singer/producer Syd the Kid sings about honesty, love, lust and the warm Californian breeze, her sultry voice sailing over co-producer Matt Martians’ slinking bass lines and luscious guitar/synth melodies. Live, THE INTERNET are a six-person outfit sure to lull you into a blissed-out smooth soul dream.

THE INTERNET will be supported by rising local star, Melbourne based singer-songwriter and musician JAALA. Check out her latest cut, the highly innovative track Salt Shaker here.

"Ego Death plays like a Sunday afternoon holed up in the bedroom, the melodies a soothing blanket to crawl under" - TIME Magazine

This is some of the most refreshing neo-soul to come out in years” - NPR

They explore sonic space, allowing for exciting pivots and an industrious live show that’s as adventurous as their sound” - LA Weekly

TOBIAS JESSO JR.

Canadian native/LA resident TOBIAS JESSO JR. comes to Australia for the very first time for the Laneway tour, toting his breakthrough debut Goon. Recalling classic songwriters in the vein of Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson, TOBIAS aims straight for the heart with his lyrical directness and weapon of choice, the piano. Collaborating with the likes of Danielle Haim, famed producer Ariel Rechtshaid, former Girls bassist JR White and the Black Keys’ Patrick Carney, and with a songwriting credit on superstar Sia’s latest track, TOBIAS’ heart-stopping tunes signal the arrival of a major new talent.

It’s simple but moving to watch, and rather than alienating the audience with an overbearing teen angst, we too are drawn into his stories of love and loss” - The Guardian

When he was singing, though, that wasn't a problem. His voice was as warm and crystalline as it is on Goon, his debut album, and now he has a live band that can give his songs the arrangements they need” - Stereogum

SHAMIR

20 year old Las Vegas artist SHAMIR Bailey burst onto the scene in 2014 with his EP Northtown, receiving crazy amounts of praise for the then 19 year old. Northtown opener ‘If It Wasn’t True’ catapulted Shamir into the limelight, showcasing his modern take on soul, r&b, house, disco, rap and pop. SHAMIR’s recently released debut LP Ratchet (XL Recordings/Remote Control Records) has critics going wild for his super quirky and uplifting jams. Pitchfork’s coveted Best New Musictitle was awarded to Ratchet and described as ‘an honest, earnest pop record.’ Ratchet lead single ‘On The Regular’ continues to dominate airwaves in Australia, with its catchy melodies and perfect application of cow bell.

SHAMIR’s music is infectiously uplifting and is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. A true example of a modern day multi-genre musical star, don’t miss out on seeing SHAMIR in his absolute prime.

Shamir elaborates on the gutsy melodies of those early demos and singles and makes good on the hype’ – Pitchfork

'He provides copious fuel. Mingling Detroit funk disco, arcade machine house bleeps, R&B soul and dashes of hip-hop, he sings of being wild, weird and under drinking age in Sin City'
The Guardian
