Laneway Festival 2017 sideshows announced

Car Seat Headrest, Jagwar Mar, Tycho & Whitney announce Laneway sideshows.

Car Seat Headrest

Will Toledo of CAR SEAT HEADREST is coming to Australia for the very first time for the Laneway tour.

Before signing to Matador Records in 2014, the 23 year old artist had already crafted an 11 album catalogue of staggering depth, all self-released on Bandcamp. His formal studio debut, 2016’s Teens of Denial, has everything you want from a rock album within one song. Check out album opener ‘Fill In the Blank’. With inspired guitar riffs, ambitious indie-rock anthems, and clever reflections of 20-something life, Teens of Denial is one of the best albums of the year. Live, Car Seat Headrest performs with a full band.

In Sydney, Car Seat Headrest will be supported by low-fi indie pop act Jarrow, who recently shared his outstanding debut LP 2003 Dream. In Melbourne support comes from Terrible Truths; a band hailing from the stifling depths of rural South Australia. They make pure and unabashed, DIY punk.

“Ahead of the pack as an imaginative singer-songwriter, capable of crafting dynamic indie rock.” - Pitchfork (Best New Music)

“A talent to be reckoned with.” - Rolling Stone (4/5 stars)

"Car Seat Headrest’s Teens of Denial is not just the rock album of the year, but may be the emergence of a new musical genius." - The Saturday Paper

Recorded on a dilapidated sunflower farm in the French countryside, Jono Ma, Gabriel Winterfield and Jack Freeman have created a sound that is like nothing and nobody else. They will be bringing their exuberant mix of psychedelia, sunshine, soul & techno to Sydney and Melbourne, playing beloved songs, new and old. Get the party started with their epic lead single, ‘O B 1’.

TYCHO

TYCHO’s brilliant new album Epoch dropped last month and it was the moment fans had been waiting for. Speeding to #1 of the Billboard Dance/Electronic charts, the LP is a satisfying evolution of the San Francisco based artist’s take on spacey electronica, brimming with gorgeous melodies and inventive sounds.

Laneway Presents and Penny Drop can announce that fans will be able to able to hear Tycho’s new music at headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne. Tycho’s meticulously crafted electronic music is equally suited to headphones, a blissed-out festival setting and the dancefloor.

Performed live by Scott Hansen and his three band members, this show will be an audio/visual stand out of the summer.

“The sound design is beautiful, the arrangements are subtle and nuanced, and the overall effect is triumphant, even bordering on transcendent.”
- Dancing Astronaut

“Each track feels like a personal epic, a custom-designed soundtrack scoring you and your life.” - Popmatters

“It's fair to say EPOCH is the crown jewel in Tycho's reigning ambient electronic discography” - Exclaim!

“Tycho weaves a diverse fabric of synthesized sounds — some soar like flutes, while others glow like orbs and grind like thick static.” - Consequence of Sound

WHITNEY

With the release of their incredibly assured debut Light Upon The Lake, WHITNEY established themselves as a band you shouldn’t be sleeping on. They made an indelible impression at this year’s SXSW, and have since been named Best New Music by Pitchfork. Lead single ‘No Woman’ is a beautiful folk-inspired number, where vocalist and drummer Julien Ehrlich’s candid falsetto floats over Whitney’s big band sound.

Whitney is built around the discerning songwriting talent of Julien Ehrlich and Max Kakacek, who started off as members of Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Smith Westerns, and expand to an epic 6-piece when they play live. They make Classic Americana for a modern world - twangy guitars, soothing percussion and anthemic horns, underscored by youthful and sincere lyrics.

Light Upon The Lake is one of Elton John’s favourite albums of 2016, read his interview with Whitney here.

Joining Whitney for both shows is Melbourne’s Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, whose rich poppy guitar melodies and propulsive rhythm have already earned them praise with international scope.

“Whitney make a warm, simple and profoundly enjoyable rock'n'roll record.” - Pitchfork (Best New Music)

“A confident and effortless record that sounds as if it has always existed.” - The Guardian (4/5 stars)

“The Chicago band's gorgeous first album, captures the listless freedom of small town life.” - The Fader
